About Sky Lights
Sky Lights is all about things you see in the sky. If it’s in the sky, and you see it, we’ll help you understand. That includes astronomy, meteorology, and optical phenomena in the atmosphere. We’ve discussed everything from black holes (which, of course, we can’t see) to rainbows. We’re also concerned about light pollution, and what can be done to preserve our view of the sky. Posts alternate between “Q&A” and “What’s Up Tonight?” Each post includes clarifying graphic content or original photos, with explanatory text. We try to keep things simple, avoiding scientific jargon and equations. Welcome to our hilltop observatory!

Sky Lights is created by Dan Heim, president and co-founder (w/ Roger Serrato) of the Desert Foothills Astronomy Club. His “Easy Field Guide to the Southwestern Night Sky,” in print since 1998 from American Traveler Press, has introduced thousands to the wonders of astronomy. Dan and his wife Sandi live in the small town of New River, AZ, about 30 miles north of Phoenix. Sky Lights is produced in their solar-powered home office, so you can feel green about visiting this blog — in accordance with the law of conservation of charge, all electrons are recycled.
